People of the Sand

While filming a piece for Saudi Arabia’s Founding Day, I asked the four cameleers to pose, unaware we were standing in the direct path of a speeding 4x4 climbing the dune. Just after I clicked the shutter, I yelled for everyone to move. A second later, the vehicle swooshed past where we stood.

“For me, portraiture begins long before the camera comes out.
I’m drawn to meeting people where they are; listening to their stories, understanding their way of life, and sharing space with them on their own terms. The camera comes second, always. Especially with tribal and rural communities, trust is everything. After generations of misrepresentation in the media, it takes time to be seen not just as an outsider, but as someone who genuinely wants to reflect, not extract their story."
