“Connection comes

before the image…”

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the beauty of a place, or swept up in the rhythm of a tribal dance, and feel the urge to capture every detail.

I keep reminding myself that connection comes before the image, that every moment spent through the viewfinder is a moment not spent connecting with people or simply being present in a landscape.

I met the two Muzeina Bedouin fishermen before sunrise and photographed them as they prepared their nets by the shore. When they entered the water, staying on land meant missing the story, so I followed them into the sea.

For two hours, I worked alongside them as they spread their nets and swam toward them, splashing to drive the fish inward. Being in the water changed the perspective; it turned observation into participation.
